Tuesday's Trivia: CORN

Naysayers aside, we grew corn this year! While we delight in our ten corn plants, here's a little corn trivia for you:

*One bushel of corn will sweeten more than 400 cans of pop.
*A bushel of corn fed to livestock produces 5.6 pounds of retail beef, 13 pounds of retail pork, 32 pounds of chicken, or 28 pounds of catfish.
*Farmers grow corn on every continent except Antarctica.
*The main ingredient in most dry pet food is corn.
*The corn cob (ear) is actually part of the corn plant’s flower.
*Each tassel on a corn plant releases as many as 5 million grains of pollen.
*There are about 600 kernels on each ear of corn.
*Pioneers planted 4 corn kernels for every plant they hoped to harvest: "1 for the maggot, 1 for the crow, 1 for the cutworm, and 1 to grow".
*The corn plant has both male and female parts. The silk is the female part while the tassel is the male part.

First off, CONGRATULATIONS on your corn crop this year! Your stalks look awesome and I bet there is some good eating at your place!

Secondly...you said POP! hard Working man just said...see, she is an English professor, she should know the correct word. He says pop, but here in the south...we say soda.

Here's some bizarre corn trivia. My Mexican friend tells me if you've got a kid with a bed-wetting problem, boil the corn silk from a fresh ear and then remove the silk and have the child drink the water. Do this for nine consecutive days with fresh ears every day and voila, no more bed-wetting. I wonder if it really works.

I love fresh corn! Too bad it's priced like gold here...

Oh, and on the scouting cake due in January? Let me help you with it, O.K.? No, I am not flying there to help you (even though one of my best friends lives in Ann Arbor and I'd love to visit her)

I can help you virtually! I can email you a few photos of awesome scouting cakes, you pick out what will work for you and I will walk you through making it :-)

People will think you walk on water.

The corn looks great!! My garden was overplanted with little yellow pear tomatoes. I can't keep up and can't get rid of the little bastards. I'd much rather give that space to a couple of corn stalks next year. Hmmm...
